Fourteen Dem Senators ask HHS for an explanation on Plan B

Fourteen Democratic Senators are asking Health and Human Services secretary Katheleen Sebelius why she overturned the Food and Drug Administration's decision to allow emergency contraception to be sold over the counter.

According to The Washington Post's The Plum Blog, female Senators Patty Murray, Barbara Boxer, Kirsten Gillilbrand, Maria Cantwell and 10 of their male colleagues have sent a letter to Sebelius Tuesday afternoon to explain what type of evidence led to her decision.

"We feel strongly that FDA regulations should be based on science," she said. "We write to you today to ask that you provide us with the rationale for this decision."

"We ask that you share with us your specific rationale and the scientific data you relied on for the decision to overrule the FDA recommendation. On behalf of the millions of women we represent, we want to be assured that this and future decisions affecting women’s health will be based on medical and scientific evidence."

A federal judge in New York is hearing a lawsuit Tuesday about whether HHS's decision was unconstitutional.

President Barack Obama backed Sebelius' decision the following day in a press conference.
