Fox & Friends hosts GOP congressional candidate for out-of-nowhere segment on prepping for nuclear attack

"Fox & Friends" hosted a Republican congressional candidate Thursday morning for a segment promoting "go bags" to prepare for natural disasters or even a nuclear attack.

Michael Waltz, a retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel and former Fox News contributor, promoted his congressional campaign and prepper gear a few weeks after announcing his congressional bid in Florida's Republican primary.

"In the past year alone, Americans have faced natural disasters, threats from North Korea and even a mobile alert telling Hawaiians to seek shelter immediately," said Fox host Rachel Campos-Duffy. "Would you and your family be prepared in case of an emergency? Our next guest says you need a go bag, this is what you need. We have retired Lt. Col. Michael Waltz here, and is he currently running for Congress in Florida."

Waltz, a defense and intelligence analyst, told viewers he worried most about a cyber attack knocking out the electrical grid, and he warned viewers to prepare for that possibility.

"You have got to grab the kids and go -- what do you do?" Waltz said. "I have one of these in every one of my vehicles."

The St. Augustine Republican said all of the gear he was promoting was available for sale online, and he raised the specter of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks to scare viewers.

"The other thing that a lot of people forget about is having just an extra change of clothes and shoes," he said. "We all remember 9/11 where everybody had to walk out of the city. If you have high heels on and dress shoes on you need comfortable walking shoes, you need warmth and rain gear. I have here a thermal blanket, a poncho and then, of course, matches."

"Survival matches," said Campos-Duffy, who's married to fellow "MTV's Real World" cast member Rep. Sean Duffy (R-WI).

The co-host then urged viewers to tune into Fox News' "Outnumbered" later in the day, when Waltz would appear again.
