Fox News’ Shep Smith questions Trump's diplomacy: Putin lied to his face -- and our president did nothing

On Monday, President Donald Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The heads of state appear to have exchanged pleasantries, a soccer ball, and established a consensus on issues ranging from US involvement in Syria to the Russian presence in Crimea to Russia's interference in the US elections.

The meeting was panned by pundits and lawmakers across the ideological divide, as lawmakers and pundits denounced the President for cozying up to Putin at the expense of US interests.

On Fox News Monday, anchor Shepard Smith wondered why President Putin's murderous past didn't appear to be a topic of debate: President Putin has been linked to the killings of journalists and supports the regime of Bashar al-Assad, who's used chemical weapons against his own people.

"But do you really bring that up in a summit and if so in what context," Smith asked Wall Street Journal national security corespondent Michael Gordon, who noted that a public context is not the best way to address the human rights abuses of heads of state—nevertheless, he described Putin's attitude towards the United States as a "zero sum game."

"Inside is a very cold person who's putting his national interests first," Gordon said.

"When the Russian president lied to our president's face and the president of United States didn't confront him on that ... is that a matter of diplomacy or was that an error?" Smith asked.
