Fox News' Shep Smith rips Trump NATO betrayal: ‘What Putin dreamed of for a long time’

President Donald Trump is scheduled to go abroad this week, spending a brief interlude in the UK before heading to Helsinki to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on July 16th.

Ahead of the trip, President Trump continues to berate NATO, raising concerns that he's alienating allies while pursuing a misguided diplomatic strategy towards Russia.

"The United States is spending far more on NATO than any other Country. This is not fair, nor is it acceptable. While these countries have been increasing their contributions since I took office, they must do much more. Germany is at 1%, the U.S. is at 4%, and NATO benefits......." Trump railed on Twitter Monday.

On Fox News Monday, Associated Press reporter Lisa Lerer told Fox host Shepard Smith that the administration's approach to NATO is sowing distrust and chaos among America's allies.

"The lack of trust in those communications, the Europeans don't know who to talk to ... the Trump Administration has fractured the alliance even more and made information hard to come by," Lerer said.

"Just as Vladimir Putin might have wanted it and dreamed of it for a long, long time," Smith replied.
