A Democratic congressman from Colorado mockingly introduced a bill on Friday designed to stop Iowa Tea Party Rep. Steve King from "abusing taxpayer dollars," the Huffington Post reported.
Rep. Jared Polis released a statement announcing what he called the "Restrain Steve King from Legislating Act," a direct response to King's bill that would bar federal judges from having jurisdiction over any cases involving marriage.
"For too long, Steve King has overstepped his constitutionally nonexistent judicial authority," Polis said in his statement. "Mr. King has perverted the Constitution to create rights to things such as discrimination, bullying, and disparate treatment. These efforts to enshrine these appalling values as constitutional rights were not envisioned by the voters, or by King's colleagues who must currently try to restrain his attempts to single-handedly rewrite the nation’s founding principles on a bill-by-bill basis."
Polis, who is gay, said that the fictional bill "would preserve the right of millions of voters in all 50 states who would prefer that Steve King refrain from legislating a role for himself in their marriage decisions."
MSNBC reported that King's measure, the "Restrain the Judges on Marriage Act," has already been co-sponsored by fellow Tea Party Rep. Louie Gohmert of Texas.
"My bill would stop the Court from destroying traditional marriage and preserve the votes of millions of voters in States that have passed bans on same-sex marriage," King said in a statement earlier this week. He has not commented on Polis' remarks.
According to the Post, Polis also called King out last year after the Iowa Republican accused immigrants of having "calves the size of cantalopes."
After King returned to the House last July from a trip to the US-Mexico border, Polis told him, "I'd like to inquire as to what calves you inspected on your recent trip and exactly what you saw. I would also point out I did have the opportunity two weeks ago to go to the border. I did not see any calves that were in any way unusual."
