Gen. Flynn called security protocols 'stupid' but criticized Clinton for the same during campaign

Retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn has been tapped by President-Elect Donald Trump to be the national security advisor. However, it seems Flynn has a complicated relationship with the "secure" part of "security."

In an extensive profile by The New Yorker, Flynn reportedly broke rules he thought were "stupid" and "insane," The Hill noted. However, during the campaign, Flynn criticized former Sec. Hillary Clinton for not following security protocols.

"Flynn broke rules he thought were stupid. He once told me about a period he spent assigned to a C.I.A. station in Iraq, when he would sometimes sneak out of the compound without the 'insane' required approval from C.I.A. headquarters, in Langley, Virginia," the profile outlines.

Flynn reportedly also had technicians install an internet connection in his office in the Pentagon even though it was forbidden.

"There was also the time he gave classified information to NATO allies without approval, an incident which prompted an investigation, and a warning from superiors," The New Yorker reports. "During his stint as Mullen’s intelligence chief, Flynn would often write 'This is bullsh*t!' in the margins of classified papers he was obliged to pass on to his boss, someone who saw these papers told me."

Yet, when it came to Sec. Clinton, Flynn was singing a different tune.

“There’s just such incredible lack of accountability for the use of highly classified information and intelligence that’s at the highest levels of our government and we know she knew that she is a target of nation states like Russia [and] China,” Flynn said on Fox News’s “The Kelly File” in April 2016.

Clinton's personal server was never hacked by Russia or China, however, the State Department was, in what was called the "worst ever" hack.

For those who have examined the "classified" emails that were released, they reportedly had conflicting classification on them. According to an NPR report on "This American Life," one email said "unclassified" at the top and bottom but had the "C" indicated inside the text. Another email that was declared classified was an email reminding Clinton to call an incoming president to express condolences for the previous president's death.

In the interview with Flynn, Kelly cited President Obama’s statement that Clinton never “jeopardized” national security with her emails. Flynn replied, “I don’t agree with the president. Not one bit.” How own breach of security was valid, however, because the rules for him were "stupid" or "insane."

"General Flynn is one of the country's foremost experts on military and intelligence matters and he will be an invaluable asset to me and my administration," Trump said in a statement.
