President Donald Trump declared Tuesday he signed an executive order to ban what he called the "chemical castration and medical mutilation" of children in the United States.
The president said the order intends to protect the nation’s youth, as he labeled gender-affirming care as a "barbaric" practice that has harmed countless lives.
"Today, it was my great honor to sign an Executive Order banning the chemical castration and medical mutilation of innocent children in the United States of America," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. "Our Nation will no longer fund, sponsor, promote, assist, or support so-called 'gender affirming care,' which has already ruined far too many precious lives."
Trump added that the order directs agencies to use "every available means to cut off" federal financial participation in institutions that provide the "barbaric medical procedures, that should have never been allowed to take place!"

Gender-affirming care has been shown to reduce depression, suicidality, and other negative outcomes for trans youth.
The Scientific American wrote in 2022 that data from "more than a dozen studies of more than 30,000 transgender and gender-diverse young people consistently show that access to gender-affirming care is associated with better mental health outcomes—and that lack of access to such care is associated with higher rates of suicidality, depression and self-harming behavior."
As such, major medical groups have published policy statements and guidelines on "how to provide age-appropriate gender-affirming care," the report added. "All of those medical societies find such care to be evidence-based and medically necessary."
The groups include the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, the Endocrine Society, the American Medical Association, the American Psychological Association and the American Psychiatric Association.
