Georgia mom left 1-year-old daughter to die in hot car while she enjoyed a 6-hour hair appointment

A Georgia mother has been charged with murder after leaving her 1-year-old daughter to die inside a hot car while she was inside a hair salon.

Dijanelle Fowler left the child inside a car for six hours June 15 while she had her hair done and attempted to cover up how the girl died, reported WSB-TV.

"I don't believe it was intentional," said Capt. Jerry Lewis, of DeKalb County police. "It seems that it was an accident. However, with that in mind, there's consequences that come with that."

Police said the 25-year-old Fowler left the car running, but never left the salon until her appointment ended, and she came outside to find the vehicle had stopped running at some point.

Investigators believe the child was already dead when Fowler came outside about 4 p.m., covered the baby with clothes and flagged a man down for help starting the car.

She texted the child's godfather afterward and said she was going to urgent care for headache treatment and searched online for symptoms of seizures, police said, and then she went to a nearby hospital.

Fowler called 911 and reported seizure-like symptoms, and emergency responders found the dead girl in her car.

The mother was treated and released from the hospital, and she left the state that night.

Fowler turned herself in Monday night on a fugitive warrant, and she was charged with second-degree murder, concealing death and second-degree cruelty to children.
