GOP congressman: Jeff Session has 'Stockholm Syndrome' making him 'sympathetic to his captors in the deep state'

Republican U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida suggested on Monday that Attorney General Jeff Sessions was a hostage of the deep state.

During an interview on Fox News, Gaetz called on Sessions to reverse his recusal in special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. election.

"I want Attorney General Jeff Sessions to renounce his recusal of this investigation," Gaetz told Fox News host Harris Faulkner. "He said he's totally unwilling to do that."

"It's like over at the Department of Justice, he's got Stockholm Syndrome," the congressman added. "He's become sympathetic to his captors over in the deep state."

Gaetz said that Sessions should appoint a second special counsel to investigate the FBI's alleged surveillance of President Donald Trump's campaign. In a tweet on Sunday, the president also "demanded" that the Justice Department launch a new investigation into itself.
