GOP lawmaker flails on CNN: Dems might go after 'the guy down the street' next if we let them see Trump's taxes

Rep. Tom Reed (R-NY) on Friday had a tough time answering CNN anchor Jim Sciutto's questions about why the American public should not have the opportunity to see President Donald Trump's tax returns.

During an interview, Sciutto questioned Reed about why Americans shouldn't have "the right to see what the president's income is and whether he's paying taxes or not?"

Reed acknowledged that while the chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee has the authority to pull anyone's taxes, he feared Congress would be going down a "slippery slope" if they used that authority to obtain the president's taxes.

Sciutto, however, wasn't letting that fly.

"We're talking about the leader of the free world, the president of the largest economy in the world, following what has been an established protocol for decades," he said. "Don't you and I have the right to know whether our president pays taxes?"

"Well, this is just the slippery slope: Where do you draw the line, just the president?"

"Yes!" Sciutto replied. "Draw the line at the president!"

Reed then predicted that future chairmen of the Ways and Means Committee could decide to pull the tax returns of "the guy down the street who I'm having a dispute with."
