GOP lawmaker mocks Homeland Security secretary’s obvious lie about family separations

Rep. Will Hurd (R-TX) on Monday mocked Trump Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen for making a patently false claim about the Trump administration's immigration policies.

During an interview with NPR's "Morning Edition," Hurd was asked about Nielsen's claim that "We do not have a policy of separating families at the border," despite the fact that multiple administration officials -- including Nielsen herself -- have gone on the record defending the administration's family separation policy.

According to NPR's Steve Inskeep, Hurd laughed when he was read Nielsen's quote -- and the proceeded to tear her to shreds.

"Kids are being separated," Hurd said. "In the last 2 months there's been about 2,000. The previous year it was almost 700. And 100 of those kids were under the age of four."

Hurd also said that, in addition to being cruel and inhumane, the Trump administration's family separation policy does nothing to actually help American security.

"Taking kids from their mothers is not preventing terrorists or drugs from coming into this country," he said.
