GOP lawmaker tells 'wealthy' Trump to pony up some of his own money if he really wants the wall

A Republican lawmaker is saying that if President Donald Trump is really insistent about getting a border wall, he should pony up some of his own alleged fortune to make it happen.

Rep. Walter Jones (R-NC) released a statement late last week suggesting that Trump use some of his own money to pay for his wall, which he has insisted is crucial for the national security of the United States.

"If Mexico isn’t going to be made to pay for a wall, that means funds must be found internally," Jones said, per Roll Call. "As a wealthy man, the president might consider pledging some of his own funds as well. Whatever it takes, just so long as we don’t add to the debt that is bankrupting our great country."

While noting that next year's deficit is expected to top $1 trillion, Jones said that "we can’t afford to keep financing the provision of government services by borrowing more and more money."

Hundreds of thousands of Trump supporters have so far pledged a total of $18 million as part of a GoFundMe campaign to build the wall. Despite this, the purported billionaire president has never once hinted he would consider chipping in to help pay for the wall himself.
