GOP panics and spends big over weekend as longest-serving Republican in the House looks like he is about to lose his seat

The playing field of competitive congressional races continues to expand into what had been considered safe Republican seats.

For example, the state of Alaska's lone congressional seat.

Rep. Don Young has represented Alaska's at-large seat since 1973, earning him title of "Dean of the House" for being the longest currently serving member of Congress.

On Friday, a new Alaska Survey Research poll found Young trailing Alyse Galvin by one percentage point.

Now a GOP super PAC aligned with House leadership is now launching what Politico described as "a surprise final-weekend effort to save Alaska Rep. Don Young from defeat on Tuesday."

The effort, reportedly in the six-figures, intends to target 100,000 Alaskans in the final days of the campaign.

The poll found 99% of Alaskans knew of Young after his 45 years in Congress, but that 44% have a negative opinion of him.

Young has a long history of making incendiary remarks and has found himself embroiled in corruption scandals.
