Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) on Wednesday brushed off the fact that President Donald Trump had been implicated in felonies by his own former attorney.
During a CNN interview, host Alisyn Camerota grilled Kennedy about former "fixer" Michael Cohen admitting to committing a felony campaign finance offense at the direction of the president himself.
Kennedy tried dodging her question by noting that Trump has insisted that his hush money payments to former mistresses were "a private business transaction."
"Do you believe that?" a skeptical Camerota asked him.
"I have no way of assessing that," Kennedy replied.
Camerota then asked him if the American public should have been able to learn that Trump was sleeping around with adult film stars and Playboy models while his wife was taking care of a newborn child before casting their ballots in 2016.
"If you're asking me, 'Did the American people understand that President Trump was a flamboyant player in politics?' [They] knew that he was," Kennedy replied. "I don't think folks in Washington give the American people enough credit. Folks in Washington think they're the only smart ones in America... The American people figured all this out early, they knew what they were getting with President Trump."
