'No': GOP strategist firmly rejects claim that Republicans want to pay Trump's legal fees
February 22, 2024
Trump-aligned Republicans attempting to take over the Republican National Committee, including the former president's own daughter-in-law Lara Trump, are pushing for the party to directly contribute to Trump's legal expenses, which have rapidly grown as he faces a wide variety of civil and criminal cases.
But that is not actually something most Republicans want to do, South Carolina GOP strategist Katon Dawson told MSNBC's Joy Reid on Thursday evening.
"We have disclosed that we're pals," said Reid. "Let's talk about this. Is it true that Republican voters would be all too happy to pay Donald Trump's legal bills?"

"No," said Dawson bluntly.
"There are several things going on here," he continued. "You have to remember, Donald Trump was the President of the United States, and we were for him. Then he lost. So Donald Trump promised us one thing. Remember, he said you're going to get tired of all the winning. I'm with Nikki Haley because I'm tired of all the losing. We lost 2018. We lost 2020. We lost 2022."
"The Republican National Committee should have replaced Ronna a long time ago, but I talked to some Republican National Committee members today," added Dawson. "And this isn't a slam dunk in March. They call the meeting in March in Houston. It's not done yet. It probably will be done, but Donald Trump last month took $8 million of $11 million raised and put it on legal fees. So I think Nikki Haley is right about a lot of things, and I'm for her and as excited about her candidacy and her success, as I was excited about you getting your own show, Joy."
