Dem leader unleashes attack on 'random senators' for derailing party's shutdown fight

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffrires (D-NY) torched the eight Senate Democrats who caved to Republicans Sunday night in agreeing to support a spending bill that doesn’t include an extension to health care subsidies.

Speaking with attorney and political commentator Aaron Parnas Monday, Jeffries said that he believed the dissenting Democrats had been led by Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), whose own daughter – A Democratic congressional candidate – broke with her over the issue.

“Initially there was one Democrat – [Sen. John] Fetterman (D-PA) – who voted with the Republicans, and then I think two additional Democrats joined him during the first and second vote,” Jeffries said, describing his understanding of what let to the handful of Senate Democrats caving.

“Then it appeared that – led by I guess the senior senator from New Hampshire – there had been ongoing negotiations to try to get to a resolution. I had not had any conversations with her, I don’t know her, [and] I’m confused as to why she made the decision to take this approach in the face of the overwhelming public sentiment that Democrats are on the right side of this fight.”

Now on its 41st day, the government shutdown began after Democrats refused to support spending bills that didn’t include an extension to Obamacare subsidies, which are set to expire at the end of this year and see 4 million Americans lose health coverage and premiums more than double for 22 million.

Now that enough Senate Democrats have caved to Republicans’ demands, however, the Senate has – for the time being – enough votes to overcome the 60-vote threshold required in the Senate.

Jeffries, however, held firm in vowing to oppose the spending bill when it reached the House.

“We can’t let a handful of random senators take us off track as it relates to the fight that we’re waging to lower the high cost of living, to fix our broken health care system and to clean up corruption,” Jeffries said.
