Graffiti artist 'Banksy' inadvertently outed as member of trip-hop group Massive Attack

After years of speculation, it appears that the identity of graffiti artist Banksy may have been inadvertently revealed as Robert Del Naja, one of the founding members of U.K. trip-hop group Massive Attack.

Jezebel.com reported that fellow musician, producer and DJ Goldie slipped up and referred to Banksy as "Robert" in a podcast interview about commercial appropriation of street culture like graffiti.

Goldie -- born Clifford Joseph Price -- and Del Naja collaborated on graffiti art before Del Naja joined Massive Attack, who had an international hit with the song "Unfinished Sympathy" and whose collaboration with Cocteau Twins lead singer Elizabeth Fraser, "Teardrop," became the theme music for the TV medical drama "House, M.D."

According to New Music Express, during the "Distraction Pieces" podcast with host Scroobius Pip, Goldie said, "For something like graffiti, which has inspired the world with font or anything to do with anyone wearing a baseball cap and fucking sneakers, at its centre it is still misunderstood. But give me a bubble letter and put it on a t-shirt and write ‘Banksy’ on it and we’re sorted… We can sell it now."

He continued, "No disrespect to [Rob/Robert], I think he is a brilliant artist. I think he has flipped the world of art over.”

Banksy recently opened a only feet from the wall that divides Jerusalem's strife-torn West Bank. Last year, the artist opened a dystopian theme park parody called Dismal Land.

The trip-hop genre, which took off in the 1990s, features slowed-down, reverb-laden electronic music over booming hip-hop beats. Other trip-hop acts include Portishead and Zero 7.
