Famed street artist Banksy’s ‘Dismaland — a dystopian Disneyland featuring a decrepit and moldering castle, a dead princess, and and rides that don’t work — opened Saturday morning to ticket buyers who stood in line for four hours to enter the “Bemusement Park” the BBC is reporting.
Created on the site of an abandoned public pool in the seaside town of Weston-super-Mare, the park –months in the making –will only be open until Sept. 27 and, with attendance limited to 2,000 visitors at a time, is not expected to accommodate the millions who attempted to access tickets online only to crash the website.
The mysterious Banksy, a world renowned British graffiti artist, drew upon the work of over 50 artists from 17 countries creating what he sardonically called: “A theme park whose big theme is theme parks should have bigger themes,” and describing it as “a festival of art, amusements and entry-level anarchism.”
After a “locals only” opening Friday night, visitors waited in line on Saturday as the park observed the 2,000 person capacity limit, allowing one person to enter for each one who left.
Visitors were treated to an assortment of grim and black-humored exhibits that portrayed real life social ills in an amusement park setting, with the park promising: “Are you looking for an alternative to the sugar-coated tedium of the average family day out? Or just somewhere a lot cheaper? Then this is the place for you. Bring the whole family to come and enjoy the latest addition to our chronic leisure surplus.”
For those unable to attend, early visitors unsurprisingly began posting online photos and selfies from inside the gates, some of which can be seen below and all of which are stunning:
О том, кто такой Бэнкси сегодня не знает разве что ленивый, его работы всегда вызывают много шума и стоят огромных денег. Когда в 2012 г. на одной из его работ “Жизнь не всегда сказка” рядом с изображенным Микки Маусом появилась надпись “Добро пожаловать в Дисмаленд” никто и не догадывался о том, что спустя три года Бэнкси действительно пригласит всех в депрессивный парк с одноименным названием. #Dismaland_park #Dismaland #Banksy
