Graphic anti-abortion ads to air in Iowa and surrounding states

Television advertisements featuring graphic images of dead fetuses will soon begin airing in Iowa, according to Mother Jones.

The ads are the brainchild of anti-abortion crusader Randall Terry, who founded Operation Rescue. He mounted a Democratic primary challenge against President Barack Obama to take advantage of a Federal Communication Commission (FCC) loophole that prevents campaign ads from being censored.

FCC-licensed TV stations can reject ads based on graphic content, but they are required by law to run the ads of federal candidates within the 45-day window of any primary election or caucus in a given state.

The ad juxtaposes images of Pope John Paul II with images of what is purported to be aborted fetuses, and condemns Catholics who voted for Obama "for cooperating with the evil of child killing."

"In 2008, 55% of Catholics voted for Obama, despite the fact that he openly supported the murder of babies. We will run these ads throughout the country, hoping to create a crisis of conscience with those voters," Terry said in a statement.

"If 7% - 8% of those Catholics will 'mend their ways' and refuse to vote for Obama in the general election of 2012, I could cause his defeat in the swing states, and help deny him the White House."

The ads will run on every TV station in Iowa during local news broadcasts. They will also appear on TV in Nebraska, Illinois, Missouri, and Minnesota.

Terry also plans to run his graphic ads in various states during the Super Bowl.
