The backlash against House Intelligence Committee Chair Devin Nunes (R-CA) has continued to grow in the wake of the declassification of a controversial memo he crafted.
Back in the central California district that sent Nunes to Washington, Fresno County Deputy District Attorney Andrew Janz has seized upon the prevailing political winds in the Democrats' quixotic bid to unseat the 8-term Republican in the 2018 midterms, Politico reported Saturday.
“We’re looking really good, thanks to him," Janz said after the memo's release. “I think we took in $100,000 between today and yesterday.”
“While he’s engaged in all those antics in Washington, people here are struggling," Janz said. “I was with a group of farmers last week — Republicans — who told me they’re sick of it … They are worried about issues like water, and they can’t get a meeting with him."
"He hasn’t done a town hall meeting here since 2010. … He hasn’t done squat for this district," Janz continued.
Nunes was also blasted in a scathing editorial by the main newspaper in the 22nd district, the Fresno Bee.
The paper concluded that Nunes was "doing dirty work for House Republican leaders trying to protect President Donald Trump in the Russia investigation."
“Nunes of Tulare is sheltered in a relatively safe Republican district, and may believe he will pay no political price for unfairly attacking law enforcement and protecting Trump,” the Fresno Bee wrote. “But his performance as chairman of the highly sensitive House Intelligence Committee has been nothing short of embarrassing.”
