'They hate this mission': Staffers at Texas child migrant camp despise their jobs

Staffers at a tent camp for migrant children in Texas reportedly "hate" the work they have to do — and would leave if they could.

A senior official at a Texas camp in the border town of Tornillo, where more than 300 minors are detained after entering the US border without authorization, told Vice News their staffers "hate this mission."

"Everyone who’s working here would go home today," the official said of the camp's staff, who are hired through BCFS, a private contractor.

BuzzFeed reported that the comments came from the Tornillo facility's incident commander who also blasted the Trump administration's family separation policy.

"I'm totally against the separation. Should never have happened," he told assembled reporters who were allowed into the camp on Monday two weeks after it opened its doors. "It was an incredibly dumb, stupid decision by our leadership. It was flawed. All it did was harm children, no question about it."

There are currently 326 minors at the camp, 23 of which were separated from their parents when they were detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

"Most of the camp’s inhabitants are boys between the ages of 13 and 17 from Nicaragua, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador," Vice noted, adding that the Tornillo camp's 14 girls are housed separately from the boys.

Vice was not permitted to formally interview the minors at the Tornillo tent city, but reporters did get to speak briefly to one boy. When they asked him how he was doing he paused briefly and then laughed.

"You can't be serious," the boy reportedly replied in Spanish.
