'He has no profound or entrenched thoughts': CNN's Cuomo rips Trump for still waffling on Charlottesville

Reporting that President Donald Trump can't seem to put his post-Charlottesville comments behind him -- once again blaming "both sides" in comments made Thursday --  CNN host Chris Cuomo mocked the president saying that he is not known for his "profound" pronouncements.

In an interview with the New York Times' Maggie Haberman, host Cuomo and co-host Alisyn Camerota tried to make sense of the president's comments that have dogged him for weeks much to the dismay of White House advisers.

Using Trump's meeting with Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) as a jumping off point -- where Charlottesville was discussed -- Camerota noted that, "It's just interesting timing. That is what he wanted to talk about hours after meeting with Senator Scott who went to meet the president to impress on him on what pain the white supremacists inflicted."

"I was was really struck by the senator's statement yesterday in particular about this is who he [Trump] is," Habermann replied. "That is what most people come away with from hearing the president talk -- this is the way he is, this is the way he sees things. The issue is that it ends up sounding like he is saying all violence is equal and it negates the questions about racism."

"He thinks he's right on this," she continued. "As we have seen many times, when he gets an idea in his head, it is hard to get him off of it, even if he has said something sounds reassuring like he is supposed to be saying previously."

"Let's be clear," host Cuomo interjected. "He may not think he's right, but he doesn't want to be wrong. Anybody who has watched the man for a long time, he has always been this way. It would be hard to ascribe to him any profound or entrenched thoughts about the nature of the alt-right or right wing extremism."

"I doubt he spent a lot of time thinking about what his position is on it," he continued. "But if he is going to be called out as wrong, he is going to fight and he doesn't care what it costs. It's almost intellectually dishonest. He said something, he got in trouble for it, He's going to keep fighting for it, just like Roy Cohn told him to."
