'He's a bigot and he's governing like a bigot': Princeton professor spells out the truth behind Trump's 'Pocahontas' slur

MSNBC analyst and professor of Religion and African American Studies at Princeton University Eddie Glaude Jr. on Tuesday bluntly reacted to Donald Trump’s racial attack on Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), repeatedly calling the president a “bigot” who is “appealing to bigots in this country.”

Glaude was speaking with MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace about “the president's body of language that is racially divisive, at best.” Wallace played a supercut of the numerous times Trump has used words and phrases to single out Mexicans, Muslims, African Americans, and so forth.

“The president rose to political prominence because of one of the great racial lies, which was the assertion that Barack Obama was an illegitimate president because he was born in Kenya,” analyst John Heilemann said.

“Donald Trump is just an exaggerated indication of the rot that's at the heart of the country,” Glaude opined. “He becomes an easy avatar. He becomes an easy scapegoat, but he represents something that's across the nation—we might call it just 30 percent, but it’s there it’s always been there, even with the election of Barack Obama in 2008.”

“What we need to simply say is that Donald Trump is a bigot, period,” Glaude continued. “He’s a bigot and he's governing like a bigot.”

Glaude pointed to Trump’s press conference Tuesday, during which the president argued House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) are soft on crime and illegal immigration.

“Those are all dog whistles that I grew up with in the 1980’s, we know exactly what that is,” Glaude said. “To say that Doug Jones is soft on crime in Alabama. He knows exactly what he's saying to folks in Alabama, [Jones] likes black people.”

“Donald Trump is a bigot," Glaude repeated. “And what he's doing is he's appealing to bigots in this country.”
