'He's good at the misdirection play': Spike Lee explains why we 'lost the ball' after Trump's anthem tantrum

Director Spike Lee, an outspoken critic of both institutional racism and President Donald Trump, proved his sports trivia prowess during a Wednesday night interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper.

"What Trump is good at," Lee said, "is the misdirection play. You're following the guy down the field and think he has a football, but the other guy's going down the other way and high-tailing it and high-stepping into the endzone."

"We don't think about what's happening in Puerto Rico," he continued, "we don't think about Obamacare, we don't think about this nut in [North] Korea. You focus on this thing and all this other stuff -- and we've lost the ball."

Lee went on to say that he "doesn't buy" NFL team owners like Jerry Jones kneeling in protest with their teams after Trump's "anthem tantrum" over the weekend.

"The reason why this whole thing happened is because [Colin] Kaepernick took a knee, and therefore, he doesn't have a job," Lee said. "If they want unity, this brother should have a job with one of the 32 teams."
