Hispanic 'Don't vote' advocate admits he voted

The creator of a controversial ad urging Latinos not to vote has conceded he broke from his own advice.

Robert de Posada, president of the Republican-affiliated Latinos For Reform, admitted to the news station TBD that he voted in Virginia by absentee ballot.

"Don't vote," Posada's ad said, flashing ominous images of Democrats while riffing on the majority party for failing to reform immigration -- a high priority for Latinos.

"Clearly, the Democratic leadership betrayed us," the ad says. "And now, when they need our votes, they are at it again with more empty promises. Aren’t you tired of politicians playing games with your future?"

An image of Sen. Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) flashes across the screen.

"Democratic leaders must pay for their broken promises and betrayals. If we just go on supporting them in November, they will keep playing games with our future and taking our vote for granted. Don't vote this November. This is the only way to send them a clear message."

De Posada denies he's being hypocritical as he didn't vote for any House candidate. (His district is represented by Rep. Republican Eric Cantor, whose seat is in no danger.)

"When you look at the substance of the ad, the website, when you look at the press release, we are very clear," de Posada told Mike Conneen of TBD. "Go vote for governor or whoever, just don't vote for those who betray you."

His remarks were reported by Politico and Elise Foley of the Washington Independent.

The ad, a Spanish-language version of which briefly aired on Univision in Nevada, was described by some as a cynical attempt to suppress the votes of Latinos, who strongly align with Democrats over Republicans. The original buy was originally supposed to carry $80,000 worth of air time.

De Posada is former director of Hispanic affairs for the Republican National Committee. He was recently quoted as saying he couldn't encourage Latinos to vote for Republican Senate candidate Sharron Angle in Nevada due to her "completely irresponsible and bordering on racist position on immigration."

De Posada's ad doesn't mention the GOP's role in blocking immigration reform. Watch it below.
