San Diego Mayor Bob Filner will not be served at four Hooters locations around the city.
The owner of the four restaurants in Rancho Bernardo, Oceanside, Gaslamp and Mission Valley has put up signs informing the public that Filner is not welcome.
“This establishment recognizes that we all have political differences and we serve people all walks of life. We also believe it is imperative for people to have standards. The Mayor of San Diego will not be served in this establishment. We believe women should be treated with respect," the signs read.
“It’s not a political move for us in any way, shape, or form. We’re strictly taking a stand for the fair treatment of women. At our franchise alone, we employ 1100 beautiful, talented women,” Director of marketing for HootWinc Melissa Fry told Slate.
The sign was originally created by Glenn Beck. On his talk show last week, the conservative commentator encouraged every business in San Diego to post the sign.
“You may not be for women if it goes against your political stand, but we are,” Beck said. “And don’t think that I won’t change this name from the mayor of San Diego to whoever else it is if they’re a Republican. You’re damn right I will.”
Filner has been accused of sexually harassing 14 women. Nearly every elected official in San Diego, along with state lawmakers and members of Congress, have called on Filner to resign. Rather than leave office, however, Filner said he would set things straight by completing a one-week treatment program.
