House Intel Dem accuses committee chairman Devin Nunes of 'trying to undermine' Russia investigation -- again

After publicly recusing himself from all matters related to the Russia investigation, Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA), the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, announced Tuesday that he had personally subpoenaed the group that published the infamous "golden showers" dossier.

That news broke on CNN as host Wolf Blitzer was interviewing Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA), another member of the California delegation that also sits on the House Intelligence Committee. According to him, it appears that Nunes is attempting to circumvent Democrats and potentially work on behalf of the White House.

"Chairman Nunes told Congress that he had recused himself from the investigation. This would violate that recusal if this is indeed what he has done," Swalwell told Blitzer. "It looks like he's trying to, again, undermine the investigation."

Though he admitted that he and other Democrats on the committee are eager to hear from Christopher Steele, the British spy who authored the dossier, the chairman's decision to act unilaterally to subpoena the dossier's publishers isn't helpful.

"For Devin Nunes to just go it alone, not work with Democrats, that is working on the side of the White House and being their lawyer and their counsel and not working collaboratively in an investigation that's very important for the future of our democracy," the congressman said.

In May, CNN warned that despite his avowed recusal, Nunes still has subpoena powers -- powers that he has since used on multiple occasions. Since recusing himself, Nunes has made multiple overtures that appear geared at halting the investigation, including a report by The Guardian in August that claimed the chairman sent staffers to London to investigate the Steele dossier.
