House Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-KY) has been pushing for President Joe Biden's son to appear in a closed-door deposition.
But in a new letter to the committee, Hunter Biden's attorney is calling his bluff — and demanding it be a public hearing instead.
"Mr. Chairman, we take you up on your offer," wrote Abbe Lowell. "Accordingly, our client will get right to it by agreeing to answer any pertinent and relevant question you or your colleagues might have but — rather than subscribing to your cloaked, one-sided process — he will appear at a public Oversight and Accountability Committee hearing ... A public proceeding would prevent selective leaks, manipulated transcripts, doctored exhibits, or one-sided press statements."
"Your empty investigation has gone on too long wasting many better used resources. It should come to an end," Lowell continued. "From all the individuals you have requested depositions or interviews, all you will learn is that your accusations are baseless. However, the American people should see that for themselves."
The Oversight Committee, along with the Judiciary Committee, have spent months investigating Hunter Biden's overseas business dealings, as part of an effort to prove that the president laundered international bribes through his son's businesses — the core allegation for which they are pursuing an impeachment inquiry.
To date, they have not produced any evidence of this; indeed, previous House GOP hearings with Hunter Biden associates have suggested that the president was only marginally aware of his son's business dealings, let alone involved with them.
