President Joe Biden is hosting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a state dinner, as he makes an official visit to the United States.
But one member on the president's guest list is notable: Hunter Biden, his younger son.
Making matters even more awkward, top House GOP leadership, including House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) will also be in attendance — putting Hunter Biden in the same room with two people who have pushed for a series of investigations into his finances and other issues.
Hunter Biden, who does not hold any position in his father's administration, recently accepted a plea agreement over two misdemeanor tax charges, and a felony charge stemming from owning a gun while he was using drugs. Republicans, including former President Donald Trump, have tried to attack this as a sweetheart deal, but in fact the deal was reportedly, if anything, harsher than what most people accused of similar offenses receive.
Republicans have also sought to build a much more serious criminal case into Hunter Biden, conducting an investigation alleging that he was engaged in an overseas bribery scheme and that the president himself was involved in it as vice president several years ago.
Most of the claims that drove this theory have been debunked, and the GOP's investigation has hit several roadblocks as some of their purported "whistleblowers" have gone missing.
