Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass confronted a number of federal agents congregating near the city’s downtown area Monday in an apparent raid, demanding that they disperse immediately.
“They need to leave, and they need to leave right now!” Bass told reporters at the scene. “They need to leave because this is not acceptable! Just wait and see, they will be leaving soon.”
At least 100 federal agents were seen taking part in the apparent raid, including U.S. Border Patrol agents, according to NBC4 Los Angeles, as were several armored vehicles. It remains unclear, however, whether anyone was arrested, or what the purpose of the activity was.
While in the crowd of federal agents and protesters, Bass could be seen speaking on the phone, which she told reporters was a call with the “head of Customs,” likely referring to Immigration and Customs Enforcement chief of staff, Jon Feere.
Monday’s apparent raid is just one of the dozens launched under President Donald Trump’s mass deportation policy, which has seen raids on farms, hotels, and restaurants across the country. White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller has reportedly pressured the Department of Homeland Security, under which ICE operates, to meet a quota of 3,000 arrests per day.
The vast majority of migrants arrested by ICE, 65%, have no criminal history according to internal ICE data, with arrests of migrants with no criminal convictions having increased by 807% since Trump took office back in January.
