During a press conference in Minneapolis on Friday, the county attorney of Hennepin County left no doubt that an investigation into the shooting of Renee Good at point-blank range by an ICE agent resulting in the 37-year-old mom ‘s death belongs with her office.
Brought on by Mayor Jacob Frey to answer questions about the FBI taking over the case, seizing all the evidence and refusing to cooperate, county attorney Mary Moriarity was careful not to cast any aspersions on the FBI and Director Kash Patel, but also said she hoped she would not be forced to go to court over the issue.
“Law enforcement investigates, our office reviews to determine if there is enough evidence to even make a decision, and if there is evidence to review, we have jurisdiction to make that decision,” she told reporters.
“So let me be clear here, we do have jurisdiction to make this decision, what happened in this case where her [Good’s] life was taken in Hennepin County,” she explained. “It does not matter that it was a federal law enforcement agent.”
She added the caveat, “To be sure, there are complex legal issues involved when a federal law enforcement officer is involved, but the law is clear. We do havejurisdiction to make this decision. We cannot make any decision, however, if there is not evidence submitted to our office.”
