A federal judge slammed the Trump administration's immigration enforcement officials for allowing detainees in Illinois to live in "disgusting" and "obviously unconstitutional" conditions, according to a new report.
The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday that U.S. District Judge Robert Gettleman ordered the Trump administration to "significantly improve" conditions at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center in Broadview, Illinois. The order was issued as part of a court case over the administration's authority to continue conducting immigration raids.
“Obviously, some of these conditions are, in my word, disgusting,” Gettleman said at a hearing Tuesday, according to the report. “To have to sleep on the floor next to an overflowed toilet, that’s obviously unconstitutional.”
The judge ordered the Trump administration to provide "bedding, hygiene supplies, daily showers, clean toilets and three meals a day," the report adds.
Administration officials previously testified that the detention centers are cleaned regularly, and there are padded benches for detainees to sleep on.
Trump administration lawyers argued that the judge's order would “effectively halt the government’s ability to enforce immigration laws in Illinois.”
