President Donald Trump's administration has seized DNA from Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) as part of its investigation into her citizenship — but it isn't revealing how it got that information, Bill Melugin from Fox News reported on Monday evening.
"The feds are in possession of Rep. Ilhan Omar's (D-MN) DNA and personal passport as part of the federal investigation into her US citizenship, colleague @davidspunt reports," said Melugin. He added that while there is no explanation of where they got the DNA, "sources tell David it was NOT from a trash can or dumpster. @FoxNews is told that reports of agents dumpster diving are incorrect. Additionally, David is told the feds have her personal passport as evidence."
"Her official passport (via her office) has not been retrieved, and authorities aren't concerned that she fled the country," said Melugin. "They believe she [is] in the U.S., and feel that if she were to flee the country, it would create problems for her down the line as her husband and family members are in the US."
Federal agents searched Omar's home earlier this month. Sources have said the investigation is into whether her original citizenship, when she was brought over from Somalia as a child refugee, was obtained under fraudulent circumstances.
Trump's border enforcer Tom Homan has teased that the investigation is stretching into other topics as well, telling Fox News only, "I know things."
However, legal experts watching the case are skeptical it will go anywhere. For one thing, Trump's administration also reviewed Omar's citizenship records during his first term and came up empty for any problems.
