Rep. Ilhan Omar was sent a package with suspicious substance and threatening pro-'patriarchy' message

The office of Minnesota Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar received a package containing a suspicious substance on Tuesday.

"Today our office received a package with a suspicious substance and a threat reading 'The Patriarchy will rise again. Merry f***ing Christmas.' Everyone on our team is okay. We reported the package to Capitol Police and they determined it to be safe," Omar wrote on Twitter.

Politico reports that after the package was reported to Capitol police, other offices on the seventh floor of the Longworth House Office Building were told to shelter in place.

"The Capitol Police said their on-site test was negative for anything hazardous, and they expected to reopen the area soon," Politico reports.

It's not the first time that Omar, a Muslim who serves as whip for the House's Progressive Caucus, has been the subject of a threat. In 2019, she reported that someone threatened to shoot her at the Minnesota State Fair.

As a member of the Squad, Omar has also frequently become a target of rhetorical attacks by former president Donald Trump and his supporters.
