'Imminent' danger of flooding in Northeast

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - Some roads in Pennsylvania were closed and residents of a New Jersey town evacuated their homes, as rain-swollen rivers began cresting on Saturday.

The National Weather Service issued flood warnings for both states, warning of "imminent" danger from rising waters of rivers and streams near Philadelphia and in northern New Jersey.

In suburban Yardley, Pennsylvania, residents rushed to move their cars to higher ground in the Rivermawr neighborhood, where two feet of water surrounded an estimated 45 homes, Mayor Matt Sinbergtold Reuters.

The area's main road, State Route 32, is also closed, and will probably remain so until Sunday, he said.

In New Jersey, the Passaic River swamped the town of Little Falls, forcing residents to evacuate their partially submerged homes, authorities said. The river, expected to crest on Saturday night, also washed over nearby streets and roads, closing them to traffic, a New Jersey state police spokesman said.

Overflow from the Delaware River, meanwhile, closed sections of State Route 29 near Trenton.
