House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) condemned Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem as he threatened to impeach her if President Donald Trump did not remove her.
The DHS secretary has fallen under heavy criticism for overseeing an immigration surge in Minneapolis that has led to the killings of a pair of 37-year-old citizen observers – Alex Pretti and Renee Good – in the past month, and Jeffries and his leadership deputies called on the president to remove Noem from her role.
"Donald Trump needs to fire Kristi Noem immediately," Jeffries told "CNN News Central." "We knowthat she is a malignant, corrupt, pathological liar. She's unqualified. She nevershould have been confirmed by Republicans in the United States Senate. She is creating harm tothe American people. Taxpayerdollars are actually being usedby the Department of Homeland Security to kill Americancitizens, and to brutalize law-abiding immigrant families. It's unacceptable, so she'sgot to go."
"We will commenceimpeachment proceedings againstKristi Noem in the absenceof her being fired," he added.
Jeffries conceded that impeachment could be a heavy lift in the Republican-controlled Congress, but he compared the effort to the ultimately successful vote to compel the Department of Justice to release the Jeffrey Epstein files.
"Congress has the power toimpeach someone who hascommitted crimes against the Constitution and the Americanpeople, so it's not virtuesignaling," Jeffries said.
"As you know, theimpeachment process is one ofthe few areas where every singlemember has theprivilege to bring a resolutionto the floor of the House of Representatives and, at theappropriate time, force an up-or-down vote," Jeffries said.
"By the way, eventhough we've been in theminority, we've compelled Republicans to move legislationto release the Epstein files. We've compelled Republicans tomove legislation to wipe awayone of Trump's most toxicexecutive orders, which isstripping rights away from morethan a million differenthardworking federal employees, collective bargaining rights, and, of course, House Democrats, against all odds, were able tomove a clean extension of the Affordable Care Act tax creditsin the minority, and all 213 House Democrats were joined by17 Republicans to protect thehealth care that the Americanpeople.
"If we've done itbefore, we can do it again."
