Indiana man accidentally shoots himself dead during gun sale

A Fort Wayne, Indiana man is dead after the gun he was selling to a relative accidentally discharged into his chest.

Fort Wayne Police said that the man, whose name has not been released, was selling the gun to a relative in his Fort Wayne home when it went off. At least a dozen police cars arrived on the scene approximately 8 p.m. and began to administer first aid.

The man, however, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Fort Wayne Police Department spokesman Chris Felton told WANE that this incident should serve as a reminder of the importance of safe gun-handling guidelines.

"Always treat the gun as if it’s loaded. Even if you’re sure it’s unloaded, still treat it as if its loaded. Never point a gun at anything or anyone you’re not willing to destroy. Treat it as loaded all the time," he said.

Felton also said that there is no suspicion of foul play, and that there are no charges pending at this time.
