Indicted NC Republican boss will keep his job after denying bribery charges and calling them 'health setbacks': report

The indicted head of the North Carolina GOP will remain in his job but give up daily operations following his indictment for federal bribery charges.

CNN reported Wednesday that NC Republican Party Chairman Robin Hayes announced in a statement that he is not stepping down, but will be handing over day-to-day operations to Aubrey Woodard, the chair of the state party's 11th district.

"In the best interest of the party," Hayes said Wednesday, "I make this announcement today and will let our respected officers lead on a temporary basis until our regularly planned party elections this June."

On Tuesday, the NC GOP boss and major Republican donor Greg Lindberg were, along with others, charged with allegedly undertaking a scheme "to bribe the state's insurance commissioner for favorable treatment of certain businesses," CNN reported.

In a statement, Hayes' attorney Kearns Davis denied the claim and said that he will, in accordance with state party rules, "allow others to lead while he heals from recent health setbacks."
