'Inhumane': GOP governor cancels deployment of National Guard to the border over Trump's family separations

On Monday, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker cancelled the deployment of the state's National Guard to the Southwest border.

Citing Trump immigration policy, a government spokesperson told WGBH the state would not facilitate the federal government's mistreatment of kids.

“Governor Baker directed the National Guard not to send any assets or personnel to the Southwest border today because the federal government’s current actions are resulting in the inhumane treatment of children,” Baker communications director Lizzy Guyton told WGBH in a statement.

As bipartisan outrage over Trump immigration policy continues, other governors have signaled they wouldn't send  troops if asked to, including Oregon Gov. Kate Brown and Vermont Gov. Phil Scott.

Jeff Sessions and Donald Trump defended the federal government's actions Monday.

At a speech to the National Sheriff's Association, Sessions boasted that the policy has served as a deterrent, but as CNN reported, the policy doesn't appear to have stopped people from crossing the border illegally.

At a space council meeting, Trump said "thieves and murderers" were streaming across the border and, "We want a safe country, and it starts with the borders, and that's the way it is."

The President didn't specify how ripping kids apart from their families promotes US public safety.
