Gloria Allred’s law firm is being investigated by the California State Bar, according to a Wall Street Journal exclusive report.
“The investigation, prompted by a recent article in The Wall Street Journal, is looking at the issues raised by women who hired the Los Angeles firm to represent them in connection with allegations of sexual misconduct,” the outlet said.
Their original report claimed clients of Allred’s firm, Allred, Maroko & Goldberg, felt “pressured to sign settlement agreements.” They also alleged Allred’s public persona as a “feminist crusader clashes with her persona behind the scenes.”
Their initial reporting recorded Allred yelling at a client saying, “How old are you? Get a hold of yourself.”
Allred released a statement to the journal, which said, “We have always acted ethically and in accordance with the Rules of Professional Responsibility.” She went on to say, “We are proud to defend our record of protecting, asserting, and vindicating the rights of women and minorities, and we will not be deterred by unjustified accusations which seek to discredit us."
The famed attorney later added, “We will not bow down to kings or The Wall Street Journal.”
California Bar officials didn’t immediately respond to the Wall Street Journal’s requests for comment.
According to the Journal, the California State Bar has been facing a significant amount of scrutiny since celebrity lawyer Thomas Girardi was disbarred in 2022.
The outlet reports more than 200 complaints were filed against Girardi, but nothing was done because “bar employees received payments and gifts from Girardi that weren’t properly disclosed.”
Allred is known for taking on high-profile cases dealing with sexual misconduct. Her clients have accused several different men of sexual misconduct, including Bill Cosby, R&B singer R. Kelly, and film director Roman Polanski.
Her firm is currently representing people who claim they were sexually assaulted by Sean "Diddy" Combs, whose trial is currently ongoing.
