Iowa HS football players busted for messages wishing gay classmate would commit suicide

A high school football team in Carroll, Iowa is under investigation after some players' homophobic group chat came to light, KCCI-TV reported.

The specific contents of the chat have not been revealed. But members of the team for Carroll High were reportedly so angry that an unidentified gay student was elected to the school's homecoming court that they wanted the student to kill himself or to "go die." Another team member allegedly threatened to drop out of school entirely if the student was allowed to remain on the court.

KCIM-AM reported that the chat was exposed after someone left a printout of the discussion and left it on a coach's windshield on Friday.

Officials have reportedly already spoken with both the players involved and the gay student they were targeting. Local superintendent Superintendent Rob Cordes said he had yet to determine the extent of the punishment to be levied against the players.

"There could be a whole range of discipline from warnings to detention to suspension to whatever," he said. "What this will entail, I don't know."
