Is the ship about to go down? First GOP senator publicly says RNC should cut off Trump

With the presidential election just two-and-a-half months away, congressional Republicans are looking nervously at the man they've nominated for president.

BuzzFeed notices that Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) over the weekend said it was time for the RNC to pull resources from supporting Trump and focus solely on saving the House and Senate.

During an interview with Arizona PBS's Arizona Horizon program, Flake was asked if he would cut Trump off if it were up to him.

"If I had my druthers, yes, I just think that given the campaign that he is waging -- some people think that he’ll change," Flake said. "I hope that he does, I’d like to be able to support him. I’m not part of the ‘Never Trump’ movement. I just think that given the kind of campaign that he’s running, I can’t support him."

Flake has been one of Trump's harshest critics in the Senate, although unlike some other GOP senators, he hasn't fully ruled out endorsing him at some point. All the same, he thinks it's time to kick Trump to the curb because he just doesn't see Trump significantly changing, despite recent hints of a "pivot" in his behavior.

"I can tell you, it’s gonna be tough to see, if we see Hillary Clinton in office appointing Supreme Court nominees," he said. "It’s gonna be even tougher if she does so and they are confirmed by a Democratic Senate. So I do hope that we shore up the Senate. Right now, if the election were today, it would be very dicey."
