‘It’s hyperbole at this point’: Joe Scarborough says calling Trump a Nazi is ‘playing into his hand’

eJoe Scarborough took on outrage over President-elect Donald Trump's tweets during his Thursday morning segment of Morning Joe.

Scarborough started by citing a New Republic article in which the author, Eric Sasson, notes that liberal opposition to Trump should focus on his proposed policies over his tweets, writing, "The less attention paid to his Twitter feed, the better."

Scarborough got into Trump's recent tweet about flag-burning and the criminalization of the act, noting that Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton co-sponsored a similar bill in 2005 and maybe what the public needs is more context. (In his segment, Scarborough said the proposed bill was from 2006.)

Clinton did not, however, suggest citizenship-stripping as punishment.

"All you're doing is playing into Donald Trump's hand — as I've said before — if you keep saying he's a Nazi, or keep saying he's a fascist," Scarborough said.

He continued, "As one renowned journalist said, comparing him to Putin and claiming that American journalists could be dragged off in handcuffs and thrown into jails — you know, it's just insanity."

"It's just hyperbole at this point," Scarborough said, "and all they're doing is helping Trump." However, Trump doesn't need to be helped — he has already won the election.

Scarborough's words echoed those of Trump's chief strategist and former executive chair of Breitbart, Steve Bannon. Rather, Bannon suggested that it helps the Trump movement "when [the liberals] get it wrong. When they're blind to who we are and what we're doing."

As for what they're doing, "Darkness is good," Bannon said. "Dick Cheney. Darth Vader. Satan. That’s power."
