CNN host Jake Tapper was taken aback by comments from a Republican senator on his program on Tuesday evening.
Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS) joined Tapper on "The Lead" on Tuesday, where the two discussed the recent pushback to President Donald Trump's immigration raids after 37-year-old mother Renee Good was killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent last week. Marshall's support for the immigration raids was unsurprising, but one comment he made about Good seemed to catch Tapper's ear.
"Thepresident's number one thing heran on was to secure the borderand to make your family safe andsecure," Marshall said. "Now, I don't know everydetail of every ICE agent, but what [DHS] Secretary [Kristi] Noemtells me is that their focus ison violent criminal aliens."
"Look, there are 300,000 to 400,000violent criminal aliens that arestill in this country," he continued. "I think that's their focus.Sometimes there's collateraldamage, but we certainly wantour families to be safe andsecure."
Tapper looked at the camera with a stunned expression.
"Did you just suggest that Renee Good is collateral damage?" Tapper shot back.
"No, of course not," Marshall retreated. "It's a very much a tragedy, Jake, but we could be just as easily talking about the death of ICE agents."
