Democratic strategist James Carville says Republicans are panicking about Mississippi’s Senate race, and he put it in characteristically colorful terms.
“Republicans are as scared as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs,” Carville wrote in a fundraising email for Democrat Scott Colom, sent on Saturday.
Carville said Republicans have “sent everyone and everything they have in their arsenal to bail out” Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.). “Hell, I’ve even seen some people call it a ‘rescue mission,’” he wrote.
He argued that “the numbers, they don’t lie,” claiming the race is a statistical tie and that Colom “has the momentum.”
Colom, a district attorney in northeast Mississippi, is trying to become the state’s first Democratic senator since the 1980s. President Donald Trump rallied for Hyde-Smith in Corinth on Monday, a sign of how seriously Republicans are taking the race in a state Trump won easily. Colom has used the visit to argue that “we’re under their skin.”
Carville, the Louisiana-born strategist who ran Bill Clinton’s 1992 campaign, has been a fixture of Democratic fundraising appeals this cycle.
