Jamie Raskin trashes Kevin McCarthy's 'invertebrate appeasement' of MAGA caucus at impeachment inquiry
September 28, 2023
Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) came out swinging at his Republican colleagues on Thursday as they opened an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden despite the fact that the government is barreling toward a shutdown in a matter of days.
During the opening of the inquiry, Raskin accused Republicans of pushing for impeachment despite no concrete proof that President Joe Biden benefited from son Hunter Biden's business dealings or that Biden intervened to change government policy for his son's benefit.
The Maryland Democrat saved special scorn for House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), whom he accused of caving to the demands of allies of former President Donald Trump in opening up the inquiry.
POLL: Should Trump be allowed to run for office?
"Speaker McCarthy's invertebrate appeasement of the most fanatical elements of his conference now threatens the well-being of every American," Raskin charged.
Raskin then accused Republicans of slavishly doing Trump's bidding in revenge for the record two impeachments that he endured during his lone term in office.
"Some people think the members of the GOP caucus aren't interested in anything logical, that they just want to see the world burn," he said. "But I see a method to the madness. A week ago, Donald Trump posted a comment, saying, 'A government shutdown... is the last chance to defund these political prosecutions against me!'"
Raskin then likened House Republicans to "flying monkeys for the Wicked Witch of the West" and said then argued that "the Constitution is irrelevant to them, what counts is what Donald Trump wants."
