Jared Kushner pleading with Saudis to 'be transparent' about Khashoggi: report

American intelligence apparently failed to warn the Washington Post journalist believed to have been killed by Saudi Arabia inside its Istanbul embassy despite having a "duty to warn" the targets of such a plot and having heard "chatter" about it, the Christian Science Monitor reports.

In a deeply reported piece about how Jared Kushner's carefully built close ties to the Saudis may unravel over the apparent murder of Jamal Khashoggi, the newspaper said that Kushner, John Bolton and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo have each made calls to Crown Prince Mohammed and asked him to “be transparent” about what happened.

The report also demonstrated how the incident appears to be a failure since Americans apparently understood that there was a plot against Khashoggi in the works.

"US intelligence officials confirm that over recent weeks they had picked up chatter among Saudi officials discussing a plan to lure Khashoggi back to Saudi Arabia and then to detain him," the paper reports.

This could become a headache since Khashoggi was a lawful permanent resident of the U.S. and, even if he hadn't been, America is expected to warn people in these situations.

"That information raised questions about whether Khashoggi was informed of the plan concerning him – US intelligence agencies operate under a 'duty to warn' individuals of such intercepted plots, even if the individual is not an American citizen," the report says.
