'Drag the GOP down': Insider says Democrats secretly hope Jim Jordan becomes speaker
October 17, 2023
Democrats are secretly hoping Republicans elect Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) as House speaker, according to a report.
The House will vote Tuesday afternoon on whether the hardline conservative will preside over the House and, while no Democrats are expected to vote in favor of the Ohio Republican, many see political upside to him winning the gavel, reported The Messenger.
“The choice of Jordan as their next speaker shows that House Republicans are intent on ignoring the issues Americans care about to focus on an extreme right-wing agenda that voters have rejected at the ballot box time and time again,” wrote Sam Cornale, executive director of the Democratic National Committee.

“His election to become Speaker of the House and the face of Republicans in Congress will drag the GOP down nationwide in 2024. “
Cornale's memo to Democratic surrogates and state parties argues that Republicans are following Donald Trump's orders by electing Jordan, and said his leadership would be a “massive electoral liability for Republicans.”

Democrats intend to highlight Jordan's support for federal abortion bans and his role in the Jan. 6 insurrection, which have proven unpopular with voters in recent elections.
