'A sick joke': CNN panel pummels GOP for pushing Jim Jordan as speaker
October 17, 2023
CNN's John Avlon hammered Republicans in the House of Representatives on Tuesday as they mulled handing the speaker's gavel to hardliner Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH).
During an analysis of the upcoming vote for speaker, Avlon scoffed at the idea that Jordan was becoming more practical than in the past, when his antics led one-time Republican Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) to label him a "political terrorist."
"The idea that Jim Jordan can somehow unify the Republican conference and lead congress is a sick joke," he said. "I want to be really clear about that. This is somebody who is directly implicated in the plot to overturn the election that led to an attack on the Capitol."

Avlon went on to predict major political trouble if the House GOP actually made Jordan their speaker and said that "if Republicans make this decision today because of fears that they look weak because they're divided, rather than any of the other members they could have put up, they will reap the whirlwind."
Although Jordan has relatively low name recognition among American voters, House Democrats have indicated they think there's enough baggage to make him a major millstone around Republicans' necks.
In fact, Politico reported on Tuesday that "Democrats are salivating over prospect of saddling vulnerable Republicans with Jordan’s record — from his history opposing abortion rights and pushing entitlement cuts to his links to the Ohio State University sexual abuse scandal that he has figured into."
