'Abuse of power': Jim Jordan gets scathing response from subpoena target

The subject of a subpoena issued by House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan hit back at the Trump ally on Friday and accused him of abusing his power.

Jordan (R-OH) is trying to subpoena information out of Mike Nellis, the founder of the digital agency Authentic. For months, the GOP has sought to investigate the agency due to its previous work with the daughter of New York Judge Juan Merchan, who presided over former President Donald Trump's criminal trial. In that case, Trump was convicted of falsifying business records.

Jordan and his associates have hoped to try to find a financial conflict on the part of the judge.

But Nellis, with the backing of the Elias Law Group, fired back with a scathing accusation. His new letter told Jordan in no uncertain terms he overstepped his authority.

"I am objecting to the subpoena issued by Jim Jordan and the Republican-led House Judiciary Committee in its entirety," wrote Nellis. "This subpoena serves no legitimate legislative purpose — making it invalid, unconstitutional, and unenforceable."

Nellis said the subpoena "relies almost entirely" on baseless claims from conspiratorial Trump ally Laura Loomer, who Nellis alleged has a "documented history of lying."

"Jordan, along with his fellow GOP committee members, would do well to heed the warnings from within their own party from Lindsey Graham and Marjorie Taylor Greene urging Republicans to stop taking orders from a known liar like Loomer," he wrote.

"Let me be clear: the allegations against our company are entirely false and purely politically motivated," wrote Nellis. "We will not be intimidated or bullied, nor will we allow this abuse of power by the House Judiciary Committee to impact our work. Our deepest thanks go out to our staff, friends, and family for their unwavering support during this time."

Loomer, a far-right activist and self-described "proud Islamophobe" recently generated controversy for Trump after the former president took her along to a memorial event for the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, despite her promulgation of conspiracy theories about the event.

Jordan, while trying to enforce subpoenas for controversial House GOP investigations, has himself come under fire for defying a subpoena to testify about his knowledge of the plot to overturn the 2020 presidential election, leading up to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
